The term ‘food poisoning’ is very broad. It is illness caused through the consumption of food or drink, therefore this would cover a range of causes including pathogens, toxins, allergy and excessive alcohol consumption to name a few. The term ‘foodborne illness’ is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as ‘diseases, usually either infectious or toxic in nature, caused by agents that enter the body through the ingestion of food or water’. Foods can sometimes be contaminated with bacteria or the toxins produced by them, viruses and in rare cases parasites. Also note that Food poisoning can occur to anyone at any time of the day be it at midnight or daytime. One might find it difficult to access a medical centre on time for treatment.

Here are simple home remedies for food poisoning;
  1. Take lots of fluids
Food poisoning is characterized by severe diarrhea and vomiting, fever and severe dehydration that would require you to take a lot of clean water, fruit juices, and soups to maintain normal body water and cleaning of the body.
  1. Ginger
Take ginger in form of ginger tea that you make by boiling it in water and addition of little sugar or honey to reduce the vomiting symptom of food poisoning.
  1. Vinegar
Take a teaspoon of vinegar before meals to increase the Ph of the stomach due to its alkaline nature. It will relieve the pain of abdominal cramping due to diarrhea.
  1. Lemon juice
Lemon is an anti-viral, anti- inflammatory and anti-bacterial remedy that will reduce cause of food poisoning in case it is caused by microorganisms.
  1. Garlic
It is also important in fighting food poisoning due to its ability to fight bacteria, viruses and fungi just like the lemon juice. It will help cure food poisoning faster.
  1. Yogurt
Due to its high content of fermenting bacteria that are good for the body, it will help reduce number of bacteria causing food poisoning.
